Neck pain - Problems, Remedies, Prevention.

One of the common medical problems encountered by the two thirds of the population is Neck pain. It can be called as painful neck or Neck stiffness. When a person feels pain while moving the neck to sides then they describes it as stiff neck.

Neck pain may start anywhere in the neck which include muscles, nerves, spinal vertebrae and between the disks. It originates from the neck, back, shoulder, while moving the jaw, upper extremities and head.

The worst case (because one feels that something is going abnormal)  involves the involvement of the nerves which gives numbness (without sensation) and tingling sensation below the part where the nerve gets pinched.

Neck pain can be caused due to injury or any other health problems and diseases such as Degenerative disc disease, Herniated disc, whiplash, pinched nerve, referred pain caused by acute coronary syndrome, spondylosis, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal cord), infections, etc.

Common problems include:

•    Stress: emotional, physical and mental.
•    Extended postures: Prolonged sitting, working, sleeping in wrong positions on chairs, sofa and tables.
•    Injuries: Minor accidents, falls may lead to pain.
•    Prolonged use: straining the muscles for longer periods.
•    Usually after a car accident sprains in the neck happens.

Home Remedies - Pain Relief:

•    Try soft collar for a period till the pain subsides.
•    Taking away the pillow while you sleep takes away the pain (most often)
•    Gentle massage helps in subsiding the pain.
•    Activities of daily life which involves the physical activity should be stopped.
•    Application of Heat packs and cold packs in the painful areas is one of the good methods.
•    Use of over-the-counter pain medication
Avoid:
•    Running, weight lifting and whatever work that causes even a minor pain.

SEEK MEDICAL CARE PROFESSIONAL IF:

•    Over-the-counter pain medication does not relieve the pain.
•    If some part of the body remains numb, tingling or weak.
•    Symptoms never get subsided for a period of week or more.
•    Pain goes on increasing and it makes you to feel severe discomfort.
•    Incontinence
•    Difficulty breathing and swallowing.

Prevention

•    Regular exercises and relaxation techniques take you away from pain caused by stress and tension.
•    Stretch every part of your body daily.
•    Maintain good posture at the work place and for the persons working at the computer should adjust the monitor level to the eye level which stops to look up and down and stretching your neck every hour and as well use a remainder in the computer as a alert.
•    Use head set if speaking over a phone.
•    Seat belts and helmets use should be mandatory while travelling.
