HYPERTENSION is one of the major causes of disability and death. It is a condition in which the pressure in the blood vessels gets elevated or abnormally high. It is one of the life threatening problems which have unrecognized symptoms.
Arteries carry purified blood from heart to all body parts and Veins carry unpurified blood from all the parts to the heart.
The blood pressure is the pressure exerted by the flow of blood on the walls of the artery. Commonly B.P is measured in (mmhg) i.e. in millimeters of mercury the normal range is 120/80 in which 120 is the systolic pressure (pressure when the heart contracts) and 80 is the diastolic pressure (pressure when the heart relaxes).
Systolic pressure above 160 and Diastolic pressure above 100 considered to be abnormal.
Complications related to High Blood Pressure:
- Atherosclerosis: Fatty deposits in the arteries and causes narrowing.
- Stroke: Reduced blood supply to the brain through a clot or haemorrhage.
- Heart Attack: heart is perfused with three major arteries and one of these are blocked due to clot the blood supply to that area stops and this condition is called Heart Attack.
- Heart Failure:Heart loses the ability to pump blood effectively.
- Kidney Failure:It helps in removing waste from the body mostly urea. if the kidney fails waste gets accumulated in the body leads to a condition called azotemia (increased nitrogenous wastes in blood).
Causes:
- Age: Key factor to get B.P raised as we grow old it gets a factor.
- Ethnicity: Races and ethnicity plays a role developing high blood pressure.
- Kidney Problems: Regulators of long term blood pressure and damage the kidneys.
- Smoking: It is also risk factor which it can be left with your knowledge it has a large chain of diseases associated with smoking. If you still like to kiss the cigarette’s it may lead you to miss from this world.
- Gender: Men are more likely to developing high blood pressure men. At younger age women are more disposed to high B.P.
- Exercise: It can be the best method for obesity, hypertension and many more diseases.
- Diet: Salt containing diet should not be used
- Medications and Drugs: High blood pressure can be triggered by some medications and drugs.
- History: If the family history says “Yes” to hypertension then the category of risk is highest.
***Avoid Alcohol and cigarette Smoking QUIT these to be FIT***
- Loud traffic noise: Even this causes elevated blood pressure when a survey held on 24,000 people.
- Other Medical Problems: Alcohol contains excessive calories calories which in turn gains weight. Hormone imbalances, certain anatomic abnormalities, tumors, and other medical problems can cause a type of high blood pressure known as secondary hypertension
- Stress: Various relaxation techniques such as taking breathe deep, relaxing techniques, staying calm etc help to manage stress. The effects of stress can be long term.
- Hereditary: It can be hereditary.
- Salt And Sodium causes B.P: Take sodium less or restricted diets
- Overweight causes B.P: Studies say that over weight can be related to differences in the blood pressure.
Pregnancy causes B.P: The last three months B.P raises in order to circulate the blood to mother and fetus and some can be due to changes at the pregnancy period.
Oral Contraceptive pills cause B.P: if she is over weight and had a +family history.
Medications that causes B.P: Tricyclic antidepressants, Pills, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Contraceptive pills, Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and Steroids.
Diagnostic Tests:
Metabolic system - Fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol.
Endocrine system - calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Serum and thyroid Stimulating Hormone.
Renal system – urinalysis, Proteinuria, creatinine.
Treatment:
Medicines that can be used to treat high blood pressure
• Calcium channel blockers, Diuretics.
• Vasodilators, Central alpha agonists
• Beta-blockers, Angiotensin receptor.
• Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
• Alpha blockers, Renin inhibitors.
High potassium and Magnesium rich diet:
Carrots, apricots, artichokes, oranges, peaches, green and lima beans, pineapple, tomatoes potatoes, prunes, raisins, squash, bananas, broccoli, mangoes, dates, greens, , green peas, grapefruit, grapes, , melons, sweet potatoes, tangerines, strawberries
• Weight reduction and exercising
• Less sodium and salt intake
• Reducing sugar intake
• Taking Low fat containing diet, Stopping cigarette and alcohol.
• Stress should be reduced
