Allergic reactions or Anaphylaxis are commonly seen over many years……………..
It can lead to severe forms and even fatal in worst case scenario, one should know the reactions, signs, symptoms and simple steps to manage when some encounter allergic reactions.
Terminology used:
Sign: Is what we see. Ex: Name boards, Number Signs.
Symptom: Is what the person says.
Allergen: Any thing that causes symptoms related to allergy. Ex: Itching eyes, nose throat, Dust particles, chalk powder, pollen grains, Conjunctivitis, smoke, snow, Food items (peanuts, mushrooms, milk, cheese, straw berry etc).
Antigen: Agent that stimulates the generation of Antibodies.
Antibody (immunoglobulin’s): Type of Protein which is found in body fluids and blood. Our immune system recognizes any foreign particle in response to Antigen.
Allergic reaction: Abnormal reaction of our immune system when an allergen exposed for the second time in our body. It can be local reaction (pertained to one part to one part of the body, ex: insect bite) Systemic reaction (whole body involved). If two or more body parts involved in the allergic reaction it can be extreme form and called as Anaphylaxis (no protection).
Major factors that contribute are Route of exposure and the time gap between the exposures, if the exposure intervals are less they can be fatal.
ABSORPTION –Deposited on skin INHALATION – Enters respiratory tract
INGESTION (by mouth) - least likely causes reaction INJECTION– Extreme forms of reaction.
Children are more prone to food allergies and adults have high incidence of anaphylactic reactions.
Amazingly Immune system protects body from foreign invaders and our cellular immunity (White Blood Cells), Humoral immunity (antibodies that are present in plasma, lymph).
Disease related:
Allergic rhinitis: Nasal passage inflammation with watery running nose. Animals Dust, molds can be a risk factor. Sore throat, Wheezing, fatigue can be symptoms associated.
Treatment includes Decongestants, Nasal Sprays, and Antihistamines Shots for allergy.
Asthma: Narrowing of airways due to swollen walls in the lungs results in wheezing trouble breathing, shortness of breathe. Asthma is Controllable but cannot be cured and it all depends on the severity.
Treatment includes Anti-inflammatories, Corticosteroids, and Bronchodilators
